Mission of Pre-College
The Office of Pre-College Programs upholds Barnard’s mission to provide the highest quality liberal arts education to promising and high-achieving young women from around the globe. Our programs are exploratory in nature and allow our students to challenge themselves while pursuing their passions among other high achieving young women in a safe and supportive environment.
Our dedicated team of world-renowned faculty as well as professional and student staff are committed to preparing high school women for the transition to a post-secondary setting. Our programs are designed to mimic the undergraduate experience at Barnard; with New York City and its many cultural resources serving as an extension of the classroom.
Our girls leave braver, bolder, and reassured about their purpose in an increasingly interconnected world.
The Barnard Difference
Each Pre-College student enrolls in one CORE course as a part of their summer program experience. CORE courses are held during our morning session from 9:30 AM - 12:00 PM, Monday through Friday. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, students will spend their 2:00 - 4:30 afternoon session taking their learning beyond the classroom walls during our extended class sessions. Whether it be exploring the Frick Collection with their art history course, testing soil with their environmental science peers, or touring the United Nations, students will take advantage of New York City as an extension of their classroom.
2 Week Program Total Classroom Instruction Hours: 35 hours
Past Courses include: Feminist Art in New York City, The Exploration of Space, Writing Place: Composing Profiles of New Yorkers, Psychology of Media, Activist New York, Contemporary Art Studio, Screenwriting, Architecture of the Everyday, and Sustainable Cities
Beyond the Gates
On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays students spend their afternoon session in Beyond the Gates, our career and college guidance programming. Students will be able to choose from on campus workshops such as Navigating the College Application Process, Grassroots Organizing, the Alternative Resume, and Professional Etiquette, and professional site visits to learn from staff members at Google, YouTube, City Hall, and the Apollo Theater.
Our Institute Programs
The Office of Pre-College Programs runs several summer program institutes. Our institutes are collaborative in nature and follow a separate schedule that puts theory into practice in real time.

Connection to NYC
Students in Barnard’s Pre-College Programs have the unique opportunity to utilize New York City as a classroom. Students will visit museums, research centers, galleries, media headquarters, and non-profit organizations as part of their CORE course learning and Beyond the Gates experience during the day. After class, students can spend their evenings at a Broadway show, taking a walking tour of iconic New York neighborhoods such as Chinatown or the Village, riding the Cyclone in Coney Island, or expanding their palette at the Queens Night Market.
Testimonials of Past Participants
“Being in New York City was the best possible backdrop for my urban studies class. No other college program could have given students so much freedom to learn from their surroundings and soak up all the culture of the area. Barnard treated us like adults, and gave us incredible freedom to explore the city on our own. ”
