Summer internship in the Project A.L.S./Jenifer Estess Laboratory for Stem Cell Research at Columbia University
|
We are looking for highly motivated Barnard students with experience in cell biology and immunohistochemistry interested in a two-month summer internship position. Successful candidates will participate in research directed towards understanding and treatment of two motor neuron diseases: ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, and spinal muscular atrophy. The laboratory uses human embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells derived from ALS patients to model the disease in a tissue culture setting. Our ultimate goal is to identify new therapeutic strategies based on a mechanistic analysis of human motor neurons and glial cells. The intern will learn a range of techniques, including differentiation of human stem cells to motor neurons, immunocytochemical methods to analyze the resulting nerve cells and quantitative methods to evaluate motor neuron survival. Please submit your resume and a brief cover letter highlighting relevant experience to Annie Hon (projectalslab@gmail.com) Chris Henderson and Hynek Wichterle, Senior Scientific Advisors, Project A.L.S. Laboratory For more information visit: www.projectals.org |

I am a gynecologist in private practice in New York City. I would be happy to offer a premed student the opportunity to spend one morning or one afternoon a week "shadowing" me in my office. The student could choose to continue for a semester, or perhaps just for several weeks. This opportunity would allow the student a glimpse of what the clinical practice of medicine is like in a small office setting, here in New York City. I am affiliated with Mt. Sinai Hospital, and as part of the experience, they could also accompany me to the operating room, if they're interested. They would also have the opportunity to talk to a woman in medicine about the challenges, and rewards, of balancing a medical career and family. If you think that you have interested students, I'd be happy to participate. ---Judy Schwartz, OB-GYN (BC'78) |
